In 2004, my dad found a newborn bunny. We named him Eli and took him into our care, but the nights were very cold, so we gave Eli a heat lamp to keep him warm. But one night the heat lamp burned out and in the morning my dad found Eli frozen to death. Guilt-ridden for not being able to save him, my dad could not bear to give Eli up; he instead sealed Eli in a bag and kept him in the freezer. My dad regularly visited Eli, holding him and kissing his bag. He remarked to me once how ironic it was that Eli died in the cold, but because my dad could not part with him Eli would remain cold forever. In summer 2009, my mom discovered a pigeon in the bottom of the freezer, and on October 17, 2009, she asked my friends and me to bury the two animals at last. We buried them together, to keep each other warm after years of being sealed away alone.
